SIGN THE PETITION

Some people are really pissed that Wizards of the Coast cut the Rust Monster from the new 4th Edition Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual. This creature was one of the original, classic creepy creatures from the old school pre-AD&D days.

I wont go into too many details as to WHY the Rust Monster, or Ol'Rusty, is so important to Dungeons & Dragons. Instead I'll point you to these excellent resources:If you're a blogger, and want to help support our cause - then please post this badge up on your site and link back to this page for people to sign the petition.

If you think the RUST MONSTER should be returned officially to the game, then please sign your name below by leaving a comment on this blog. Let's give WotC an idea how much we care about our poor-old, misunderstood friend: The Rust Monster.

One thing-- you really need to get some alternate rust-monster art up there. Something old-school. I've got two folks lined up to sign if there's a 1E rust monster on the button!

Totally - there always needs to be monsters whose main purpose is to let surprised (and now poor & angry) adventurers beat it to death with sticks. Maybe they're not as iconic as owlbears, but if you asked me what three monsters I grew up with, it'd be the carrion crawler, the owlbear, and the rust monster.

But enough talking about my family...

The rust monster has to have its place in D&D. I would love to see it coming back.

Not only is the rust monster keen, it's adorable as well. No one can look at its 2e art and not love it. :D

Bring back the rust monster!

Honestly, the Rust Monster is too iconic to remove from D&D.

...though its equipment-destroying capabilities could be toned down for higher-end equipment. If 4e has anything resembling WBL, then a scaled-up Rust Monster would be PAINFUL at high levels; enough to cripple one or more weapon-users for until they can get enough extra wealth (assuming the party actively redistributes it in such a manner. Unlikely) to compensate, leaving them behind the party for a good deal of time, if not the rest of the campaign at higher levels.

But don't REMOVE the Rust Monster! It's one of -the- icons of D&D!

Oh My Frigging God! Are you kidding me? You know, it seems like WotC is actually TRYING to get rid of long time fans of the game.

Get rid of Gnomes, reinvent the magic system and now this. I am probably like most gamers. I don't have the kind of cash to go out and buy up every book that they release the instant that it comes out and honestly, right now I have no reason to for some time. If they don't put out an updated GreyHawk or re-release one of the campaigns I loved that they killed off (Darksun and Ravenloft) I won't be getting the books until I can't find any third ed players anymore.

This is the kind of stuff that makes a guy consider switching to a more stable system like Palladium.

WOHOO! spread the word! if any of you have a blog or website... post the above SAVE THE RUST MONSTER logo on your site with link back here!

@ ManusNigrum : I believe Ravenloft is going to be part of Open Grave: Secrets of the Undead (2009) as a 4E expansion to the generic setting.

Save old Rusty. A world without rust monsters is like a world without annoying paladins or long swords.

While Rusty will always have a place in my game, other too should officially know the charm of his corrosive cuddle ... consider this my stamp of approval ... (although, I prefer the pic from the Monster Manual ... a matter of aesthetics though)

4.0 ED.... ugh... you know what? I will never buy it for this and SO MANY more reasons until I see it at a garage sale and will stand firm at not more than $2 a book. Thanks a bunch Hasbro/WoTC. lol.

"It'll be good for kids who want to play." Guess I intend to see to it my kids are smart enough to handle 3.0. After all, it's not like theres THAC0 lol.

Rusty is one of the staples of D&D. Almost every time my parties venture underground, they run into then and/or carrion crawlers.
